Abstract painting · Sion, Switzerland

Acrylic, concrete, sand and pigment: matter built up in thickness, often worked with the fingers, which changes with the hour of the day.

Close-up of the canvas Camargue: pink and coppery matter crossed by a crest of white and gold.

01 — The artist

The work starts on the floor.

The canvas lies flat. The matter is spread by hand — several canvases are painted with the fingers alone, without a single tool — then worked back with a knife. It has to set before anything can be painted on top of it.

Acrylic, concrete, sand, texture paste, soft pastel, real leaves: the material changes with what the canvas asks for. The thickness is part of the subject. A photograph only shows one version of it.

That is where the titles come from — Estran, Marais Salant, Proxima, Kintsugi. Places and ideas that all come down to the same thing: light caught in a surface.

02 — Works

Four canvases, to begin with.

Estran — horizontal canvas: a pale beige sky, a raised line of blue and white foam, then a broad ochre shore.

03 — Commissions

A canvas made for your wall.

Size, palette, support: a work can be conceived for one particular place. The more unusual pieces — concrete, diptychs, triptychs, canvases for children's rooms — all begin this way.

Fêlure — grey and black concrete panel, split vertically by a flow of vivid red paint.

Nature sauvage — diptych: a spray of green, brown and white stems bursts from the centre.

How a commission works

04 — Three constants

01

Matter

Acrylic, concrete, sand, texture paste. Applied by hand, sometimes with the fingers alone, then worked back with a knife. The thickness is part of the subject: some canvases are as much relief as image.

02

Light

Golds, bronzes and pearly whites that turn with the angle. A canvas hung in a corridor is not the same colour in the morning as in the evening.

03

Format

From the round tondo to a 90 × 30 cm vertical panel, from diptych to triptych. The format counts as much as the motif.

05 — Contact

Write to the studio.

For a question about a work, its availability, its price, or for a commissioned canvas: a message is enough. Francine answers herself.
