A work that does not exist yet.

Many canvases begin with a wall, a room, a quality of light. Size, palette and support are decided together, then the matter takes over.

Francine Berthod hanging a canvas on a white wall herself, both hands on the stretcher.

What can be asked for

  • The size. From a small square to a two-metre diptych, by way of narrow vertical panels and round tondos.
  • The palette. Tuned to a room: the turquoise and sand of the seascapes, the pinks and coppers of the Camargue, the deep greens of Forest, the greys of concrete.
  • The matter. Acrylic alone, sand, texture paste, concrete, soft pastel, real leaves, bronze and gold spray highlights.
  • The support. Canvas on stretcher, wood panel, concrete — according to what the work asks for and where it will hang.

The unusual pieces

The ones that break the frame.

Concrete split by a red line, a triptych of golden discs, a two-metre diptych, a round canvas, leaves and feathers caught in the matter. Each came from one precise idea — and each can inspire another.

Fêlure — grey and black concrete panel, split vertically by a raised flow of vivid red paint.

For children

A canvas for a child's room.

Some requests are more intimate: a canvas for a child's room, with their colours, their name, their animal, or a support imagined for them.

The matter stays the same — the matter of the large canvases — but the subject is theirs. These are often the pieces that are kept the longest.

In preparation

The photographs are on their way.

The canvases already made for children have not been photographed yet. In the meantime Francine is glad to show them: ask by message, she answers herself.

Ask to see them

How it goes

Four steps, no mystery.

  1. The conversation

A message, by email or through the form. The place, the wall, the light, what you like in the existing canvases. A photograph of the wall often says everything.

  2. The proposal

Francine comes back with a size, a palette, a material and a price. Nothing starts before everything is clear and agreed.

  3. The studio

The canvas lies flat, the matter is built up, left to set, worked back. Progress photographs are sent at each important stage.

  4. Handover

Collected at the Sion studio, delivered within the Valais, or shipped packed for transport. The work leaves signed, with its label.

Timescales and prices depend on size and material; they are stated at step 2, before any commitment.

Getting started

Just say where it will hang.

A photograph of the wall, a rough size, two or three colours: that is enough to start. Francine answers herself.
